Periodontal Disease Consequences and Prevention

Linden NJ dentist Anatoly Bensianoff speaks about the condition of severe periodontal disease (gingivitis) if left untreated. Dr. Bensianoff also mentions how the bacterial toxins can cause problems such as breath odor and bone loss as well as spreading throughout the mouth, kidneys, and heart. Further discussed is how prevention and early detection of gum disease can make a difference of up to ten years in your life expectancy.

Linden NY dentistAs Dr. Bensianoff discusses in the video, problems in the mouth such as gum disease can be quickly passed into the bloodstream due to a high concentration of blood vessels in the soft tissues of the mouth. Because of these and other factors, gum disease has been shown to reduce the performance of the immune system and increase risks of heart disease, diabetes, and early labor during pregnancy.

The good news is that gum disease is easily preventable. Unlike most other diseases and infections, gum disease will almost certainly develop if it is not actively prevented. The most important steps in preventative dentistry are:

  • Brushing your teeth after every meal for two to three minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Angling the toothbrush towards the gums while brushing gently.
  • Flossing at least once a day.
  • Maintaining a biannual schedule of oral examinations with your dentist.
  • Receiving a professional teeth cleaning every six months.

By following these simple steps, you can prevent a lifetime of infection and painful consequences. To learn about preventative dentistry, give us a call, or read more about the dentistry services offered by Magic Smiles Dental.
