Implant Dentures

Dr. Anatoly Bensianoff, a dentist in Linden NJ, speaks about the function, aesthetic (appearance), and comfort issues concerning denture-wearers. Dentures are typically replaced every 5 years as they can begin to feel loose. Dr. Bensianoff suggests that this lost of stability and comfort can be counteracted by implant-retained dentures which is like “anchoring” the denture piece in place. Implant dentures can restore the confidence patients lose when their dentures just don’t feel the same.

Linden NJ dentistDentures have been a common dental solution for hundreds of years; until recently, they were the only option for patients who had lost all or most of their teeth. However, dentures did not provide the same benefits as natural teeth. Some of the problems that have been associated with traditional dentures include:

  • Dentures may not always fit perfectly and can cause pain, tenderness, or soreness in the mouth.
  • With time, the jawbone shrinks away from dentures, making them feel loose and floppy.
  • Due to this shrinkage, dentures have to be replaced every five years or so.
  • As bone and gums shrink away, the face and lips start to appear sunken-in.
  • Chewing certain foods can be difficult.

While patients with dentures had to live with these inconveniences before, now there is a solution – implant dentures.

Benefits

Implant dentures replace a full set of teeth just like traditional dentures, but without the headaches! This is possible because implant dentures are held in place by several dental implants.

Dental implants are small screws that are inserted right into the jawbone, just like the root of the tooth. The jawbone then grows around the implant, making it a permanent part of you. The implants are inserted through the tissue and bone, so they help to retain the gum and bone tissue that would normally be lost due to missing teeth.

Implant dentures can be attached permanently to four dental implants for a much healthier and practical set of new teeth. Because the implant dentures are attached so securely, they won’t rub or move uncomfortably in the mouth. They are also better equipped to bite into apples or chew tough foods like steak. In short, implant dentures have solved most of the problems formerly associated with dentures. This new set of teeth is as close to the real thing as it gets.

Retain Bone Structure with Dental Implants

Linden NJ dentist, Anatoly Bensianoff, speaks about dental implants vs. dentures and your options for treating periodontal bone loss  from gum disease. Dr. Bensianoff can use dental implants in conjunction with full or partial dentures to retain bone structure. The aesthetic appearance, cost, and functionality of dental implants, in comparison with conventional dentures, is discussed, as well as patients’ concerns.

Linden NJ dentistIf you have ever been faced with losing all or most of your teeth, you know how traumatic this experience can be. Besides the feelings of loss associated with missing teeth, you also have some decisions to make. Many patients go with traditional dentures since this seems to be the simplest and least expensive way to solve the problem. However, dentures do not totally solve the problems caused by missing teeth.

The Relationship between the Jawbone and the Teeth

The jawbone and teeth work together in a symbiotic relationship, meaning that they depend on each other to remain healthy. The teeth use the jawbone as an anchor, but the jawbone also anchors around the teeth. When teeth go missing for a long period of time, the jawbone will waste away without the teeth to stimulate it and hold it in place. It is this process that makes long-term dentures a less desirable option. Since the dentures don’t stimulate or anchor the jawbone in place, they do nothing to keep it healthy. Patients with dentures often find that over time the bone structure in their jaw and face starts to waste away, leaving the face with a sunken appearance.

Implant Dentures

This is why Dr. Bensianoff encourages patients to go with implant-supported dentures, whenever possible. Dental implants replace not just the visible portion of the tooth, but the root as well.  A dental implant utilizes a small screw that is inserted into the jawbone to hold the replacement teeth in place. The jawbone then grows around the implant just as it would the natural root of a tooth. The result is that replacement teeth are held in place more permanently and the jawbone has the anchor it needs to remain healthy.

An entire mouthful of dental implants would be expensive, but now a full set of dentures can be attached to just four dental implants to hold it in place. This solves many problems at once:

  • Implant-supported dentures are much more affordable than a full set of dental implants.
  • With several dental implants in place, the jawbone will remain healthy and intact.
  • The new set of dentures can stay in place permanently, without the need for daily removal.
  • Implant-supported dentures are more resilient, with the ability to chew foods such as apples and steak.

Implants for Missing Molars

Implant dentist in Linden NJ, Anatoly Bensianoff, speaks about how missing back teeth (molars) often go overlooked because they aren’t seen, and the aesthetic appearance of visible teeth are typically made a priority. Dr. Bensianoff suggests that, while the smile is very important to us, it is the loss of the functionality of the missing molars that can set off a chain reaction. Our teeth are always shifting, and without the missing teeth in place, much more can go wrong, such as TMJ (lower jaw) misalignment, cavities growing from food trapped in gaps, and neck and back pain.

Linden NY dentistMany patients are under the impression that a missing molar is not such a big deal, since it can’t be seen in the back of the mouth. At Magic Smile Dental, we see a lot of patients who ask us to repair a chipped tooth in the front before replacing a missing back tooth. This attitude is a mistake that can eventually lead to serious problems with the teeth, gums, jawbone, and face.

The most advanced method of replacing missing teeth today is the dental implant. An implant is unique in that it replaces a tooth in its entirety, from crown to root. This is achieved by inserting into the jawbone a tiny screw to serve as an anchor for the new tooth. Once the implant has been placed, an abutment and then a dental crown can be attached. The finished product is a fully-functional tooth that looks natural.

A tooth implant will circumvent a host of dental problems that are caused by a missing molar. The crown will hold the place of the tooth, preventing surrounding teeth from shifting and loosening. Also, since it is attached to the jawbone, the replacement crown will prevent the bone loss and TMJ problems that can occur when a tooth is missing for a long period of time.
